Liverpool Universities Society Change Ringers

Liverpool Universities Society Change Ringers (LUSCR) welcomes ALL students from all higher education institutions in and around Liverpool. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never pulled a rope in your life, all you need is enthusiasm and a will to learn. Change ringing is very interesting and extremely good fun, and we can teach you all you need to know. A sense of humour might therefore be a good idea too.

  • We are primarily responsible for the ringing of the bells of St Francis Xavier (known as SFX), the Roman Catholic church on Salisbury Street in Everton, about half a mile from the city centre and the University of Liverpool campus.

But that’s not all we do… We organise a range of events throughout the year. Some of them involve ringing, many don’t.

We visit several different pubs, before and after (and occasionally instead of) ringing. Regular social events include pub crawls, pancake parties and group meals, as well as the local Liverpool district ringing meetings and events. Also on the annual calendar is the Northern Universities Association weekend in November, plus our Freshers’, Easter and Summer ringing tours. And of course there is also THE social event of the year – The Annual Dinner – held in fine style in a hotel in Liverpool on the third Saturday evening in February each year.

How to find St Francis Xavier – SFX

SFX (St Francis Xavier) is the Roman Catholic parish church of Everton, and has eight bells cast by Taylor’s in 1921, with a tenor weight of 16-1-6. They have recently been rehung and ‘go’ very well. Our practices are on Friday evenings between 6 and 7pm, and afterwards we usually head into town to join the practice at Pier Head (12 bells, tenor 41-3-15). On Sundays we ring from 9:45 to 10:15am, and then often go for breakfast. Many LUSCR members also support other local towers on weekdays and Sundays, but don’t feel obliged to do so.

SFX is a 5-10 minute walk from Lime Street Station, the town centre and the University of Liverpool campus, and there are bus stops reasonably close, especially on Pembroke/London Road. If you are coming by car, there is parking in the road outside the church, or in a small car-park in Carver Street on the Islington junction (you will have to go ’round the block’ via Shaw and Langsdale Streets to get to this, as you cannot turn into it from the junction).
